Discontinued GAF-Elk Shingles

If your roof has damaged GAF-Elk shingles, you may qualify for a full roof replacement through your homeowners insurance, less your deductible and subject to your policy.

What Happened to Elk Shingles?

Elk Corporation made popular architectural shingles, including the Prestique line. GAF acquired Elk in 2007, and legacy products were phased out over the following years. GAF confirms that Prestique 40 was discontinued in 2010 with no direct replacement; dates vary by product line. Many original pre-2008 Elk roofs are now roughly 18 years old or older as of 2026. Condition and service life vary, and age alone is not a covered insurance loss.

The Matching Problem

With discontinued designs and years of weathering, finding a suitable match for repairs is extremely difficult. Covered storm damage on an Elk roof may support a full replacement subject to your policy, though there are no guarantees. Our GAF Certified expertise helps ensure accurate identification and proper documentation for your claim.

How to Identify an Elk Roof

An architectural roof installed before about 2008 is a clue, but not absolute proof. Colors like Weathered Wood, Barkwood, Charcoal, Birchwood, and Hunter Green were popular, but are not exclusive proof.

You might also notice granule loss, curling edges, or cracking tabs. During your free inspection, we examine the shingles and review any leftover packaging or installation records you have to help confirm the manufacturer where possible. Please leave roof access to our inspectors.

Insurance Restoration & HAAG Certified Experts

Roughly 80% of our work is insurance restoration. Our HAAG Certified inspectors know exactly how to document storm damage and guide the entire process—from the initial inspection and meeting with the adjuster to reviewing the scope of work and completing the final installation.

GAF-Elk Shingle FAQs

Are Elk shingles still made?

Legacy Elk shingle lines, including discontinued Prestique products, are no longer manufactured. GAF acquired Elk in 2007 and phased out legacy products over the following years; the discontinuation date depends on the exact line. This does not mean today's GAF shingles are discontinued.

My Elk roof only lost a few shingles — do I need a whole roof?

Possibly, but not automatically. Even limited covered storm damage may support a broader or full replacement if no suitable, compatible matching repair is possible. We inspect the roof, identify the product where possible, and document the repair limitations. Your insurer determines coverage subject to your policy.

Will my insurance cover it?

Your policy may cover storm damage and, where its terms support it, replacement beyond the damaged shingles when a suitable repair is not possible. Coverage is subject to your policy and deductible; normal wear, roof age, or discontinuation alone is not a covered storm loss. Our HAAG Certified inspectors provide documentation and meet your adjuster to support the claim.
